The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's overriding function is to produce and store a clear liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been found that medications like Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
