The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's overriding function is to produce and store a clear liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been found that medications like Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual fulfillment.
