The prostate is really a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's principle job is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy man's prostate gland is somewhat greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could suggest disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has recently been found that drugs like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or for strictly sexual purposes.
