The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its most primary function is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human prostate is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can impede urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results might indicate a disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
