The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most significant role is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen. A sound human's prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme situations completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could suggest disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs such as Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
