The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its chief function is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A healthy human prostate is slightly bigger in size than a shelled walnut. In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results may indicate a disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel can be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
