The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its leading job is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human's prostate is somewhat bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe situations completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could signal disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
