The prostate is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's predominant role is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can impede urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised blood PSA results might signal disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been observed that medicines such as Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
