The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most primary role is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in severe cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised test results can indicate a disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been detected that medications such as Docetaxel may be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
