The prostate is a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's most paramount job is to first secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound man's prostate gland is somewhat greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.
In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Elevated test results might be an indicator of disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that medications like Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
