The prostate is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its overriding role is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. In elderly males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medications or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results can highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel may be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.
