The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's primary function is to produce and store a transparent fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A healthy individual's prostate gland is slightly bigger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can block the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe situations totally impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results could signify disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
