The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most significant job is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is a component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.
Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances totally impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.
In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect elderly males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results might indicate a disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
