The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's overriding role is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can jam up urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme instances completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There can be also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results could signify disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
