The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's chief function is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). There can be also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results could be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been detected that medications such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of cancer.
