The prostate is an important part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its principle role is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is part of semen. A non-diseased human's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is named bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results might be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been noticed that medicines including Docetaxel can be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
