The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most important job is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A healthy individual's prostate is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could indicate a disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been noted that medications such as Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
