The prostate gland is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's predominant function is to produce and store a clear liquid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated test results could signify disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel may be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
