The prostate gland is a component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most significant role is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased individual's prostate is a little bit bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme situations completely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which can be normally quite low. Raised pSA blood results may be an indicator of disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
