The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's chief function is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid. A sound human prostate is a bit greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.
Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or operations.
In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicines or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect elderly men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been uncovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
