The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's main job is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A non-diseased human prostate is slightly bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can obstruct urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated pSA blood results might highly suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
