The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its principle function is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of semen. A healthy man's prostate gland is a bit bigger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe situations totally impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel can be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
