The prostate is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's paramount role is to produce and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal individual's prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that affects older men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Raised blood PSA results could indicate a disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been discovered that medicines including Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
