The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most paramount job is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased individual's prostate is somewhat larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in severe situations totally impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects elderly men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may signal disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
