The prostate gland is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its primary job is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human prostate is a little bit larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can hinder the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medication or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike elderly men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Raised blood PSA results can highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been noticed that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or just for sexual fulfillment.
