The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's leading function is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen. A healthy man's prostate gland is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can block urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might signal disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has recently been uncovered that drugs such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
