The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. There is also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated test results may signify disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been found that medicines like Docetaxel can be useful in treating prostate cancer.
