The prostate is a gland that is part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's chief function is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A normal individual's prostate gland is somewhat bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medicines or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised test results might indicate a disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been observed that medications including Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
