The prostate is a vital part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its most primary job is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid. A sound human's prostate is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that affects elderly males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can be an indicator of disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been uncovered that medicines such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of cancer.
