The prostate is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's leading function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is part of semen. A sound man's prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a shelled walnut. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can signify disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been detected that medications like Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of cancer.
