The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most significant role is to produce and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A non-diseased individual's prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can hinder the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe instances totally impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Raised test results can be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been detected that drugs like Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual fulfillment.
