The prostate is a vital part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's overriding job is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human prostate is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can jam up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe situations totally impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or operations.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may indicate a disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel could be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
