The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most primary job is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate gland is slightly larger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results can suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been noticed that medications such as Docetaxel are useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual purposes.
