The prostate gland is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's predominant job is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased human prostate gland is a little bit bigger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme situations totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or operations.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results might be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual purposes.
