The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its most paramount role is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid. A sound human's prostate is a bit larger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in severe instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been uncovered that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
