The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's primary job is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is part of semen. A normal man's prostate is somewhat heftier in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in very extreme cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised test results might suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been noticed that drugs like Docetaxel may be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or just for sexual purposes.
