The prostate is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's principle function is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of semen. A non-diseased human prostate gland is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe instances wholly impossible. In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There can be also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results could signify disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel can be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.
