The prostate gland is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's main job is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy individual's prostate is a bit larger than a walnut. Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers that strikes older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results could signify disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been detected that medicines such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or strictly sexual purposes.
