The prostate is an important part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most important role is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results may indicate a disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
