The prostate gland is part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's predominant function is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A sound man's prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can stop up urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or even operations.

In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could signal disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel are effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
