The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's paramount function is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. Raised pSA blood results can be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been noticed that medications including Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
