The prostate is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's most paramount job is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of semen. A normal man's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can occlude urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgery.

In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medication or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could indicate a disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been noted that drugs like Docetaxel can be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
