The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most important function is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of semen. A healthy human prostate gland is slightly bigger than a shelled walnut. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised pSA blood results may be an indicator of disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been observed that medicines including Docetaxel can be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
