The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's principle job is to produce and store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid. A normal individual's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations completely impassable. In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could suggest disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been uncovered that medications such as Docetaxel could be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
