The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its main role is to first secrete and then store a clear liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound individual's prostate is somewhat greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can block the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results could indicate a disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual fulfillment.
