The prostate gland is a component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's most significant function is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results might signal disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has recently been detected that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
