The prostate is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's chief function is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human's prostate gland is a little bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medication or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike elderly males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results could suggest disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been found that medications such as Docetaxel may be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
