The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its principle job is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased individual's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in severe instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results may be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
