The prostate is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's predominant function is to first secrete and then store a clear liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A healthy human's prostate gland is a bit bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can obstruct the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe cases totally impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may signify disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has recently been discovered that drugs like Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
