The prostate gland is a vital component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its overriding job is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound individual's prostate gland is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can impede the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results could signal disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been observed that medications including Docetaxel are useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual purposes.
