The prostate is an important part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's paramount role is to first secrete and then store a clear liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could be an indicator of disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been uncovered that medications such as Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
